CANADIAN FOUNDATION OF TARAS SHEVCHENKO
Foundation: Call for artist submission
Each March, the Shevchenko Foundation commemorates the work of poet
Taras Shevchenko by distributing thousands of bookmarks to children
across Canada who are enrolled in Ukrainian language classes in public,
Catholic, and Saturday schools. All Ukrainian dance schools and ensembles
also receive this souvenir art piece miniature, which for some has
become a collector's item.
We ask artists to create an art piece that depicts a work
representing the chosen literary excerpt from Shevchenko's poems.
This year's excerpt is "Кавказ" - "The Caucasus".
The selected artwork will be used in the 2014 March campaign. The
successful artist will receive an honorarium of $1,000.00 for the
original artwork selected.
The image should be suitable in its dimensions to be reproduced as
a bookmark. The finished bookmark size is 2" x 7.5".
These campaigns have become successful educational tools from the
Shevchenko Foundation. They also serve as a fabulous venue for exposing
the artist to a very large audience. If you are interested, we encourage
you to get in touch with our office toll free: 1-866-524-5314 or email
The deadline for submissions of artwork
for the March campaign bookmark is January 15, 2014.
We look forward to your submission!
CANADIAN CIVIL LIBERTIES ASSOCIATION
release: Free airfare for KGB man in Canada
For immediate release (Ottawa) -- Dec. 4, 2013 Still concerned about
the presence in Canada of a bogus refugee claimant and former Captain
of the Soviet secret police (KGB), Mikhail Lennikov, the Ukrainian
Canadian Civil Liberties Association is offering him a Christmas
gift: a one-way economy airfare from Vancouver to his home town of
Vladivostok in the Russian Federation. Lennikov was ordered deported
by a federal court judge more than four years ago, but remains in
Canada, claiming a non-existent "right of sanctuary" in a Lutheran
church basement in Vancouver. Meanwhile, the Canada Border Services
Agency is failing to do its duty, which is to remove him.
Commenting on the offer, UCCLA's chairman, R.W. Zakaluzny, said:
"We don't want KGB men in Canada. We don't understand why the CBSA
has failed to do what it was ordered to do more than four years ago.
There is no 'right of sanctuary.' This man had no right to enter Canada.
He has no right to be here. He is not a refugee. He was told so by
the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. He has shown no remorse
for having been an agent of Soviet repression. There are hundreds
of thousands of genuine refugees whom this country could be helping,
so why would we want to let him stay? UCCLA will pay for him to leave.
He can be back in his home country by Christmas and even catch the
