Annual Report

May 8, 2004 — Canora UCC Branch has had another enjoyable and busy year 2003-2004.

The annual meeting was held in May 2003, with the same executive remaining for the ensuing year to promote the educational and cultural projects, promote mutual understanding, and support other community organizations with good fellowship.

In the month of May, as in the past, UCC volunteers beautify, plant flowers and care for the grounds at the Canora Welcome Statue Lesia, a proud landmark that complements the town of Canora with its uniqueness and attraction.

Canora UCC is proud of its Ukrainian Heritage Museum, which is open year round from 2-5 p.m. with the exception of the holiday season in December and January.

The Museum is a big asset to the community, attracting many tourists including school tours, travelling tourist and group tours. During open hours UCC volunteers host on a rotating basis, guide tours, and serve coffee and dainties. As in the past new articles are being added which makes our Museum overgrown and makes a need for expansion.

June being the month of Decoration Day, special services are held in both Ukrainian churches. The Ukrainian Orthodox Heritage Church is overwhelmed with the special service followed by a “lawn luncheon” and fellowship.

The Annual Legion Decoration Day is also observed.

July is the month of Ukrainian church camps. Both church camps are well attended and are frequently visited by UCC Canora Branch members.

August – UCC-SPC luncheon held in Saskatoon for Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine Andrew Robinson who spoke on Canada-Ukraine Relations. President Paul had the pleasure of attending the luncheon.

Preparations were being started on observing the 70th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Famine Genocide which is being held on November 23/03.

The Independence of Ukraine was observed with church service and followed with refreshments and fellowship at the Ukrainian Catholic hall.

The arrival of Jaroslaw Nimylovych and his family from Ukraine were welcomed to their new home in Canora. Mrs. Maryna (Dmytro) Petrushchak was also welcomed upon her arrival from Ukraine to join her husband Dmytro in Canora.

In September UCC-SPC hosted a “forward planning” weekend September 26-28/03 at St. Peter's Abbey at Muenster. President Paul and Doreen attended the workshop.

The Ukrainian Language Class 1 has finally materialized under the supervision of Irene Schigol and Pat Marchinko as teacher. Classes are held at the Junior Elementary School with 10 students enrolled.

Bingos have started as a fund raiser.

November/03 – A report was given by Victor Schigol regarding “Museums of Saskatchewan” who attended the “Marketing Workshop” at Yorkton Western Development Museum.

Fund Raiser -- a successful Borsch luncheon was hosted by Rose Remenda and Hattie Berlinski.

A successful Nation Builders banquet attended by many Canora UCC Branch members was held at Yorkton at which time Mrs. Lillian Steranko of Stenen, Sask., was one of the award recipients.

On November 22, 2003, a joint 70th Anniversary of the Ukraine Famine Genocide was observed at the Ukrainian Catholic church with a special service and a special guest Bishop Stephan from Ukraine in attendance. Many candles were lit in windows of homes and church bells were ringing.

December/03 – The Ukrainian Language Class students held a St. Nicholas program. Canora UCC members attended the program at which time the students were acknowledged with a Christmas gift.

Fund Raiser – a successful Christmas bake sale was held at the Mall.

As a Christmas tradition UCC members went carolling January 14/04 visiting many shut-ins and bringing their traditional Christmas greetings.

The Ukrainian Language Class students participated in the Annual Christmas Carol Festival.

Taras Shevchenko concert in Canora
UCC-SPC Executive Director delivers main address

The Canora Branch of the UCC sponsored a concert commemorating Ukraine’s most famous native son, Taras Shevchenko. Some 60 people from Canora and area attended the program, which took place March 7 in the Rainbow Hall.

After the singing of O Canada, UCC President Paul Ortynsky greeted those in attendance and began the concert with opening remarks. Shevchenko’s “Zapovit” was followed by a varied and interesting program featuring recitations and readings, instrumental performances, a Ukrainian folk dance, and choral selections. A multimedia presentation/address by UCC-SPC Executive Director Danylo Puderak provided some biographical and historical information on Taras Shevchenko and his work.

Iryna Lazurko concluded the formal portion of the program with closing remarks. Following the singing of the Ukrainian national anthem, refreshments were served.

Below are some pictures taken by Danylo Puderak.
