This monument to Ukrainian pioneers, officially unveiled and blessed
October 22, 2000 in the presence of over 250 people, was a project
of the Veselka Prince Albert & District Ukrainian Culture &
Heritage Club. It reads:
"Dedicated to all Ukrainian pioneers of the late 19th and
early 20th centuries who, with their blood, sweat and many tears
carved a lifestyle for their families from what was once the Canadian
wilderness.
In this new country the early settlers overcame language barriers,
poverty and sickness. Despite these difficulties, they considered
Canada to be their "Promised Land" and "New Home".
They quickly established schools and churches. Through hard work
and many sacrifices they laid a firm foundation for our future generations.
As Ukraine’s greatest poet Taras Shevchenko pleaded: "Learn
brothers. Think and learn other cultures. But never forget your
own."
SIDE 2:
In 1992 our Ukrainian community joined together to celebrate the
100th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. This celebration
led to the formation of Veselka – The Prince Albert and District
Ukrainian Culture and Heritage Club. Our aims and objectives are
to promote and foster Ukrainian language and culture and to support
Ukrainian youth in their activities.
Spearheaded by members of Veselka, this monument was completed
in the year 2000 with the generous assistance of many donors. We
gratefully thank everyone."
(Equivalent Ukrainian-language dedication inscribed on other two
sides.)
