New Executive for UCC Yorkton

November 28, 2007 -- The Annual meeting of the Yorkton Branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress was held Tuesday, November 27, 2007. The following members were elected for the ensuing year: Past President --Harry Kardynal, President -- Merle Maximiuk, Vice President --Sonja Pawliw, Secretary -- Pauline Semeniuk, Treasurer -- Irene Strilchuk, Auditors -- Eugene Hnatiuk and Peter Gulka.

Branch Activity November 2004-March 2005

Hosted Kyiv Chamber Choir in St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Reception for the choir and public followed at the St. Mary's Cultural Centre.

A joint moleben was held December 12, 2004 for a successful election in Ukraine. Orange ribbons were distributed and a collection was made for assistance in Ukraine's election December 26, 2004. Collections were held in St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church for two consecutive weekends. Money was forwarded to the ehad office in Winnipeg. Prior to the election three community members were interviewed by Yorkton This Week, which published a write-up.

Three community members were interviewed on CTV about the internment of Ukrainians in Canada during the First World War 1914-20.

The combined choirs from St. Mary's & Holy Transfiguration churches are preparing for the Taras Shevchenko concert to be held Sunday, March 13, 2 PM at St. Mary's Cultural Centre. Students of Ukrainian language classes will participate.

Thirteenth Anniversary of Ukraine's Independence

All patriotic Ukrainians pray for the land of their forefathers, and with this intent, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Yorkton Branch, organized a Commemorative Thirteenth Anniversary of the Proclamation of Ukraine's Independence, which was held on Sunday, August 22/04 at St. Mary's Cultural Centre. We fulfilled our obligations to the UCC Headquarters and the Saskatchewan Provincial Office. Our donations were made to:

  • Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko
  • Ukrainian Dance Competitions Festival held in Yorkton
  • The Lubka Kolessa Piano Scholarship Fund at McGill University in Montreal
  • Dobrodiyka Orysia Ehrmantraut for her studies in Lviv, Ukraine
  • Press Fund of the UCC-SPC publication of Visnyk

Activities:

  • Organized the 12th Anniversary to commemorate Ukraine’s Independence
  • Members worked many long hours in preparation to host the Nation Builders Awards Banquet
  • Approved the sponsorship of the Canadian Ukrainian National Festival Choir from Dauphin, MB, who staged a concert in Yorkton, and hosted the performers with lunch and refreshments
  • Submitted bilingual essays describing the 12th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence to two publications
  • Submit announcements about our events to our local media
  • Members attended the Memorial Service (Panakhyda) in remembrance of the victims of the Ukrainian Famine/Genocide of 1932-33
  • Organized a Literary Program in honour of Taras Shevchenko in March 2004

1992
  • January 21/92 Organizational Meeting was held in the Ukrainian Orthodox Auditorium with 23 members present, the Executive was elected as follows:

1993

  • The Executive remains the same except - Olecia Pitts replaced Harry Kardynal as treasurer and Tom Baran replaced Dobr. Mary Hnatiw on the Board of Control.

  • A research project was implemented to procure a suitable site for a commemorable "Ukrainian Pioneer Park" in the City of Yorkton, to erect a Cairn in Memory of the 100 years of Ukrainian Pioneer Settlers in Sask. George Skwarchuk was chairman of this project.

  • Yorkton UCC Branch was atuned to the Canada-wide observance of the 60th Anniversary of the planned Great Famine/Genocide in Ukraine in 1932-33 by the ruthless Soviet regime.
1994

  • The Executive remained the same as in 1993

  • The Yorkton members attended a prestigious banquet and program honouring Honourable Sylvia Fedorak as the Ukrainian Liutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon; that was by invitation.


August 21 at 2 P.M. an Official Opening of the Ukrainian Pioneer Park located at the corner of Third Avenue and Henderson Street in Yorkton; Provincial and local dignitaries participated with all present. A Special Prayer Service was served by both clergy of the Orthodox and Catholic congregations. Other items included singing, music and students dancing in the Ukrainian costmes.

1995

  • The Executive remains the same as in 1994

  • $1500.00 financial contribution to North Eastern Cable TV, Yorkton
    for programming "Charming Bandura".
1996

  • Change in the Executive members: of three positions - for first vice George Skwarchuk, second vice Myron Tatarniuk and treasurer Brenda (Perepeluk) Pasloski. The rest of the Executive members remained the same as in 1995.


April held a Special Church Service - Panachyda to observe the 10th Anniversary of the tragedy of the explosion of the Nuclear Reactor in Chornobyl Ukraine, when many were killed, wounded, leaving thousands homeless - causing future physical, mental disabilities. All present made generous donations to The Children of Chornobyl Fund.

  • Request by the UCC that a "Proclamation" COMMEMORATING the
    Chornobyl Disaster be made by the City of Yorkton. On April 26/96 Mayor Ben Weber proclaimed April 26 as the "Day of Chornobyl". A number of members attended the ceremonies of the proclamation. Executive members were interviewed on the program "Eyes on Saskatchewan" relating the horrible situation of the Chornobyl Disaster.

1999

  • The Executive remains the same except for one change - Dr. William
    Gulka was chosen for First Vice President instead of Mr. Myron Tatarniuk.
2000

  • The Executive members that served in 1999 were asked to stay on for
    the year 2000.

  • Unfortunately, due to the circumstances, there was no program held to honour Taras Shevchenko

  • President and secretary prepared a concise resume of Yorkton UCC Branch's history that was required to be deposited into a Time Capsule for the future generations of 2025 year.
2001

  • August 26th celebrated the Tenth Anniversary of Ukraine's Independence. We were honoured to have distinguished guests in the persons of UCC-SPC Pres. Mr. E. Krenosky, Ex. Director Mr. O. Skrypnyk, MLA AND Deputy Premier, Hon. Clay Serby and His Worship MAYOR Phil DeVos.

  • October 14/01 sponsored a Ukrainian Gala Concert featuring Yevshan Ukr. Folk Ballet Ensemble and Lastiwka Ukr. Orthodox Youth Choir and Orchestra, from Saskatoon, to also commemorate the Tenth Anniversary of Ukraine's Independence.

  • June 6 hosted an agricultural delegation from Ukraine with a noon luncheon, having City of Yorkton dignitaries lined up in the welcoming reception.
2003

  • The Executive remained as in 2002

  • At present we are helping the Nation Builders Committee to hold the Recognition Banquet in Yorkton on Nov. 2/03, many responsibilities must be fulfilled.
