Luba Goy

A graduate of Montreal's National Theatre School, Ms. Goy now lives and works in Toronto. Over decades, she has been extensively involved with Ukrainian Canadian communities, participating in numerous fundraisers and events in support of the Ukrainian Canadian Culture. Canadians know Luba Goy best as a member of the comedy troupe "Royal Canadian Air Farce." Air Farce began on CBC Radio in 1973 and ran for 24 years. Since 1993, millions of Canadians from coast to coast tune in weekly to CBC Television to see and hear Air Farce's unique and hilarious blend of topical humour, political zingers and social commentary aimed at our country's (and the world's) most newsworthy people and events. Ms. Goy's other artistic works include voice-over animation, fundraising events, commercials, and film roles. As a member of Air Farce, Luba Goy has received many awards, including the Governor-General's Performing Arts Award, 15 Actras, a Juno, a star on "Canada's Walk of Fame" in Toronto, an honourary doctorate degree, Maclean's Honour Roll of Canadians Who Make a Difference, and the prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award from Women in Film and Television. Luba Goy, an entertainer of international acclaim, is immensely proud of her Ukrainian Canadian heritage. It is not only the pride of her heritage, but her enthusiasm in and supporting role in the assurance of its continued celebration that warrants her fitting as the guest performer for this PCUH Scholarship Fundraiser.

The Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble was created in 1960 with the goal of "preserving, interpreting and expressing historical and contemporary Ukrainian cultural values for public enjoyment through technical and artistic excellence in the art form of dance". For over 44 years, Yevshan has thrilled audiences throughout the world, including performances in England, Sweden, Ukraine and the United States. Yevshan has toured Canada on several occasions, performed at two World Fairs, and has twice danced for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Most recently they performed in New York, San Diego and Western Ukraine. This December Yevshan has been invited for a Cultural Exchange between Canada and Cuba. Yevshan, with its 30 dancers is under the artistic directorship of Mr. Vitali Sorokotiaguine. All dancers are either students at the University of Saskatchewan or have graduated from this institution. They practise three times a week for 3 hours and all hold time part-time or full time jobs. These young people are very dedicated to staying true to their mission statement of preserving Ukrainian cultural values through dance.

The Ukrainian Canadian Creative Artists Series is a program which reflects and celebrates the many cultural, social, and historical aspects of the Ukrainian-Canadian experience. The UCCA promotes Ukrainian culture as a living and vital heritage that has continuing relevance in the notional Canadian context.
