The Saskatchewan Ukrainian Historical Society is busy planning the
next visit of “In Baba’s Trunk” to Regina. SUHS and the trunk will
be in Regina on Saturday, November 13 at the Ukrainian National Federation
Hall. For this visit to Regina, SUHS, the Regina Ukrainian Canadian
Professional & Business Association and the Saskatchewan Genealogical
Society are working together and expanding on the May session, “Your
Family Tree”.
The day will focus on the next stage of researching your family
history. At the conference in May, the participants were invited
to indicate on a present-day map of Ukraine which village their
family emigrated from. Using this map, we will discuss the changing
borders of Ukraine as well as the name changes of numerous villages.
Another challenge that many researchers run into is the use of
different languages. Documents could be in English, Ukrainian, Latin
or Polish. The necessity of knowing how to read, write and speak
another language is a must for a genealogist. We will discuss how
to deal with this issue in one of our sessions.
We are also planning a field trip to the Saskatchewan Genealogical
Society library. We will have a tour of their resources and how
they can aid the budding or even experienced genealogist.
SUHS will now be regularly featured in Visnyk. In the future, SUHS
will be publishing historical stories, historical facts, folklore
that survived the trek to Canada, but is on the verge of extinction,
as well as updates on its new projects.
Continue to check the UCC-SPC Web site to see what SUHS is doing.
If you have some wonderful stories, ideas or interesting historical
facts about your Ukrainian community, please share them with me.
SUHS is the place to share and preserve our Ukrainian history in
Saskatchewan.
