UCC-SPC 2010 Nation Builders & Community Recognition Honourees

September 1, 2010 -- (Saskatoon) 2010 marks the sixteenth time that the Ukrainian Canadian community of Saskatchewan, under the auspices of the UCC-SPC, will celebrate the accomplishments and meritorious contributions of some of its notable citizens through the Nation Builders & Community Recognition Awards.

This year's awards presentation luncheon will take place on Sunday, November 14th at a luncheon at the Delta Bessborough Hotel in Saskatoon commencing at 1 PM.

Nation Builders Awards are presented to persons who have made meritorious contributions, which have had a significant impact; left a legacy; and/or provided an exemplary role model to the Ukrainian community and/or Saskatchewan-Canada. The 2010 Nation Builders Honourees are:

Chief Judge Ernest C. Boychuk ret. (Saskatoon): first Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan, first Ombudsman of the Province of Saskatchewan and one of the first in North America, first Chair of the Saskatchewan Public Utilities Review Commission, Chief Public Prosecutor for the City of Saskatoon, Magistrate for the Province of Saskatchewan, Commanding Officer of HMCS Unicorn. Judge Boychuk also took an active role in the Ukrainian community of Saskatoon, particularly with at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. George, Ukrainian National Federation (Saskatoon), and the Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble.
Mary Woroniuk Budzak (Saskatoon): recognized teacher-librarian; leader and mentor in Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada; instructor of Ukrainian folk arts; promoter, volunteer, and financial supporter of numerous charities; strong proponent of organ donation.
Gerald M. Luciuk (Prince Albert-Wakaw-Regina): retired civil servant with Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration; soil scientist; advisor and leader in many international development projects in Russia, Inner Mongolia (China), Cuba, Ukraine; prolific author on soil science and sustainable agriculture; Ukrainian Orthodox community activist (Ukrainian Orthodox Youth Association, Mohyla Institute, Descent of the Holy Spirit Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Regina).

Community Recognition Awards are presented to persons who have made meritorious contributions in one or more of the areas of youth achievement; leadership; volunteerism; cultural preservation & development; and/or creativity & innovation to the Ukrainian community and/or Saskatchewan-Canada. Recipients of the 2010 Community Recognition Awards are:

Leadership / Volunteerism

Garry Gawryliuk (Theodore-Yorkton): educator for over 30 years working with at-risk youth; dedicated sportsman (fastball, hockey); coach and mentor to countless young athletes in hockey, wrestling, softball. Gawryliuk is also a long-standing member and leader with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Parish of St. John the Baptist in Theodore.

Cultural Preservation & Development

Eugene Hnatiuk (Goodeve-Yorkton): retired educator; activist in the Ukrainian Catholic community of Yorkton (Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Parish); long-time volunteer; community and church choir director; respected teacher of Ukrainian language to youth and adults.

Cultural Preservation & Development / Volunteerism

Patricia Marchinko (Canora): educator; long-time Ukrainian dance instructor and supervisor; Ukrainian pre-school teacher; community activist and dedicated volunteer; recognized for her volunteer contributions to Canora and broader community.
Alex Patryluk (Regina): retired hotelier; devoted member of Ukrainian community in Regina; long-time member/volunteer holding positions of leadership with the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League, Descent of the Holy Spirit Ukrainian Orthodox Church Choir, Regina Society of Prosvita, Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Kyiv Pavilion (Regina Mosaic) and Regina YMCA.
Terence B. Zwarych (Regina): former Ukrainian dancer (Tavria Ukrainian Folk Dance Ensemble, Regina), instructor (Klenovee Lystky Ukrainian Dance Club, Ituna), artistic director (Tryzub Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, Calgary); founding member of Chaban Ukrainian Dance Ensemble (Regina); dedicated volunteer taking on leadership roles in Regina including: Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood, Regina Mosaic, Regina Multicultural Council, Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan, and St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Parish.

Creativity & Innovation

Olga M. Stefaniuk (1943-2010) (Hubbard-Saskatoon): respected author (A Rose Grows: Fighting Cancer, Finding Me); advocate; public speaker; mentor; founder of HOPE Cancer Help Centre; dedicated volunteer, wife, mother and grandmother; long-time member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Sts Peter and Paul in Saskatoon.

Youth Achievement

Lucas Makowsky (Regina-Calgary): Olympian; 2010 Winter Olympics Gold Medalist in Speed-skating; Ukrainian dancer; Dean's List Student, College of Engineering, University of Calgary; student of music (piano).
