Ternopil university's Ukrainian language head returns to Saskatoon as visiting scholar and sessional lecturer

Dr. Olena Huzar, Neporany Fellowship Recipient

For more than a decade, Dr. Olena Huzar has been the Head of the Ukrainian Language Department at the Ternopil’ National Pedagogical University in Ukraine. She is a writer, lecturer and researcher in the area of linguistics and methodology of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language.

Dr. Huzar was recently awarded the Neporany Fellowship, a program of the Canadian Foundation of Ukrainian Studies (CFUS). A competitive award administered by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta, the Neporany Fellowship will allow Dr. Huzar to conduct research in the area of Ukrainian language development among speakers of English.

While in Saskatoon, Dr. Huzar will also be a sessional lecturer for the intermediate Ukrainian language course offered at the University of Saskatchewan. The arrangement is an extension of the Ukraine Study Abroad Program, an academic initiative of the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage (PCUH) at St. Thomas More College (STM).

Collaboration in the area of Ukrainian language education between the Ternopil’ Pedagogical University, St. Thomas More College at the University of Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Learning is now in its fourth year of development. Dr. Huzar has been the on-site coordinator of the Ukraine Study Abroad Program since its inception, working closely with U of S program coordinator Dr. Natalia Shostak and other STM academic staff.

This is Dr. Huzar’s second visit to Saskatchewan. Her first visit proved to be extremely beneficial to Ukrainian language educators and community members. During this second visit, Dr. Huzar will once again be working closely with the provincial Ukrainian Education Consultant and Saskatchewan Teachers of Ukrainian (STU) in order to provide professional development opportunities for language renewal and teaching methodology.

Saskatchewan students are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Huzar as an STM Visiting Scholar and sessional lecturer this term. Students will be immersed in a program of Ukrainian language, culture and history, supported by the latest technology and resources. Dr. Huzar’s class will also set the stage for the Summer Study Abroad Program for those students who are interested in travelling to Ukraine during the months of May and June.

Наш гість із України, професор Олена Гузар, займається дослідженнями в ділянці лінгвістики й методики викладання української мови як іноземної та вже понад 10 років очолює кафедру української мови в Тернопільському національному педагогічному університеті (Україна).

Творча співпраця Олени Гузар із STM College при Саскачеванському університеті та Міністерством освіти Саскачевану триває вже четвертий рік. Упродовж цього часу вона є координатором і викладачем Україномовної літньої програми в Україні, що тепер є спільним проектом Саскачеванського університету та Тернопільського національного педагогічного університету.

Зараз Олена Гузар, уже вдруге приїхавши до Саскатуну, розпочала викладати курс української мови другого рівня в Саскачеванському університеті. Студенти впродовж трьох місяців будуть мати чудову нагоду заглибитись в україномовні студії, краще зрозуміти давню та величну історію України, що допоможе їм підготуватись до продовження навчання в Літній україномовній програмі в Тернопільському національному педагогічному університеті.

Також доктор Гузар буде мати науково-методичні семінари з вчителями української мови в Саскачевані, досвід проведення яких два роки тому засвідчив їх потрібність та користь.
