St. Petro Mohyla Institute's Language and Culture Immersion Summer Program

May 5, 2006 -- Hello Students, Parents and Grandparents.

Students, have you planned your summer? Want to improve your Ukrainian language skills plus get a high school credit in Ukrainian and have a great time singing, dancing, cooking, eating, playing Bandura, playing sports and doing some travelling? Check out the Mohyla Ukrainian Language and Cultural Immersion Program (Dzherelo).

Every year St. Petro Mohyla Institute offers a 5-week Ukrainian total Immersion and Culture Program. Dates this year are July 5 to August 7, 2006 in Saskatoon. Students from 14 to 18 years of age are invited to apply now.

Each student earns a credit in Ukrainian 10, 20 or 30; an accreditation accepted in Canada and the United States. Along with 100+ hours of Ukrainian language instruction, students speak the Ukrainian language at all times.

Activities include a three-day dance workshop with a celebrated choreographer, singing (selections from church, folk, and pop genres), Bandura, Mystetstvo (arts and crafts), cooking classes and daily outdoor sports. Church services are attended regularly. Students perform a series of mini-concerts (e.g. Ilarion residence, Zelenyi Hai) before the grand finale concert on the final day (this year -- August 7, location to be announced). One highlight of the Immersion Program in the previous two years has been an invitation to perform on the Sunday Showcase stage at the Dauphin Ukrainian National Festival.

“The program’s importance is really self-evident. The change seen in people over as little as 5 weeks is incredible -- the opportunities for demonstrating leadership and responsibility are as many as any summer camp, but all focused on a topic dear to our hearts. The program fosters further growth of the Ukrainian Canadian community, and helps youth to network across the diaspora and in Ukraine.” -- Carissa Klopoushak
