Ukrainian community celebrates Education Week 2006

October 13, 2006 -- UCC-SPC is pleased to continue its annual support of youth literacy and Education Week. This year, Education Week takes place 15-21 October. The theme is Наші діти... наші школи... наше майбутнє / Our Children... Our Schools... Our Future.

In recognition of this, UCC-SPC is pleased to provide every child enrolled in a Sadochok, Kindergarten or Grade 1 Ukrainian school program in Saskatchewan with a Ukrainian book. This year, the book Томчик by Lesia Savedchuk has been selected.

Tomchyk is a yellow triangle who wishes to be red like the rest of his friends. When he succeeds in changing his colour, he sadly realizes that his friends no longer recognize him. Fortunately, his tears wash away the red paint, and he returns to his original colour. It is a wonderful story, which introduces the theme of identity, acceptance and not hiding our true selves.

UCC-SPC expresses its support for our Ukrainian school programs as well as the many families across Saskatchewan who have their children enrolled in primary Ukrainian language programs. In this way, we also encourage our youngest language learners to further develop their Ukrainian language skills through reading.

A representative from the UCC-SPC will present the books to the children in their classroom during Education Week and, at the invitation of the class, a guest reader from the community will attend and read to the class from the book.
