All-expense-paid work experience in Ukraine, May 2007
April 10, 2007 -- The International Student Success
Office (ISSO) and the Office for International Cooperation and Development
(OICD), through an agreement between the University of Regina and
the University of Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, are facilitating a work
experience for Canadian (or Permanent Residents) students for 3 to
4 weeks at Ivano-Frankivsk this May 2007.
Students from any discipline are welcome to apply; the focus of
the work experience will be the perspective a given discipline brings
to the field of energy. ISSO and OICD are looking for three to four
senior undergraduate students who are interested in participating
in this exciting venture.
The University of Regina, through OICD, will pay travel expenses
for the students, and Ivano-Frankivsk will cover the costs in Ukraine.
Students need spending money, and will have to pay for obtaining
a passport (no visa is required).

Ivano-Frankivsk State Technical University of Oil and
Gas -- University Of Regina
Pilot Project 2007
Proposed Study Plan for Students
Three to four students from the University of Regina (U of R) will
go to the Ivano-Frankivsk State Technical University of Oil and
Gas (IF) in May 2007 for a three- to four-week study/work experience.
Since this is a pilot project and because the students will come
from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, we propose the following
study plan:
We suggest that the study plan be based on a ‘buddy’ system, meaning
that U of R students be paired with an IF student from the same
disciplinary background who also speaks English. The IF student
would introduce the U of R student to faculty members in that discipline,
and IF faculty and students would help the U of R students to acquire
knowledge about the field of energy from the perspective of that
particular discipline. Further, the ‘buddies’ would work together
to understand the different socio/economic/cultural realities of
their two countries which impact on the field of energy.
The U of R students would be required to develop future research
questions/possibilities based on the knowledge acquired during their
work with their IF ‘buddies’ and faculty. This assignment would
be in the form of a paper which provides the rationale for potential
future research.
Additionally, since IF has a language department and presumably
English is taught, the U of R students could act as English coaches
which would also enable them to acquire more knowledge about the
field of energy from a variety of perspectives.
We understand that the International Office of IF would be responsible
for planning and implementing such a study program as well as providing
excursions to other cities and places of interest for the students
so that they deepen their knowledge of Ukraine.
Upon return from Ukraine, the U of R students would be required
to submit a brief report about their exchange experience as well
as to help promote future exchanges with IF.
