About Stefan Horlatsch

Horlatsch -- a survivor of the Ukrainian Famine-Genocide
-- will escort the International Holodomor Remembrance Flame across
Canada marking the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor. In co-operation
with the Ukrainian World Congress, Ukrainian Canadian Congress and
Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this torch will travel from
Canada to 32 other countries,
ending its journey in Ukraine.
- Stefan Horlatsch is a retired teacher from Toronto, Ontario.
- He was born in 1921 in the Zaporizhzhia oblast of eastern Ukraine.
He grew up in a family of farmers and small landowners.
- During the Holodomor in Ukraine, Stefan Horlatsch’s family
had their land, livestock, and grain forcibly seized by Soviet
authorities.
- 11 members of his family perished during the Holodomor.
- Stefan Horlatsch has dedicated his life to promoting the cause
of freedom.
- In 1991, to celebrate Ukraine’s Declaration of Independence,
Stefan Horlatsch led a “Walk for Freedom” across Ukraine, covering
over 4,500 kilometres.
- As past president of Canadian Friends of Ukraine, Stefan Horlatsch
has participated in the opening of numerous Canadian libraries
in 14 cities across Ukraine.
- Stefan Horlatsch is the author of six books, and was recently
inducted as an Honorary Member of the Ukrainian Writers Union.
