year since that time (i.e., 1981, 1983, 1985).
|
General Description
|
A juried festival of Ukrainian song,
instrumental music, and speech arts.
|
Detailed Description
|
Konkurs is basically a province-wide
Ukrainian music festival. The program itself is held over
the course of two days, usually in March. On Saturday, the
individuals participating in the festival perform their routines
according to the category in which they are registered (see
photocopy from 1985 syllabus for details of categories and
registration procedures). On Sunday, a concert is held featuring
the best performers, and awards are handed out. Preparation
for KONKURS is a fairly lengthy and involved process. An organizing
committee starts approximately a year in advance of the program
with establishing a budget; selecting program items; preparing
a syllabus; publicizing the Arts Festival; gathering awards
and scholarships; obtaining jurists; co-ordinating registrations;
and ensuring that all logistical matters are taken care of.
|
Target Audience
|
Individuals and groups involved with
Ukrainian music and speech arts. In practice, this has usually
involved younger artists under the age of 18.
|
Funding Sources
|
Approximately 40% of the Konkurs budget
is provided by Provincial UCC through SASK TRUST funds. The
remainder is self-generated by the Konkurs committee through
donations (for awards and scholarships), registration fees,
and admission.
|
Management & Review
|
Konkurs is co-ordinated by a voluntary
committee headed by a co-ordinator. The co-ordinator is paid
a nominal honorarium, but rightfully should be regarded as
a volunteer. The committee handles all aspects of the program,
using the UCC office and/or staff only occasionally. The program
is reviewed by the UCC executive.
