Having Fun Learning English

February 23, 2009 -- The unique thing about studying English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as an Additional Language (EAL) is the method of teaching. Teachers are not lecturers but rather facilitators. The focus is on student input. The four language skills of listening, speaking, writing and reading are used interchangeably in each class through an inductive process. That is, the teacher selects a topic and grammar point and briefly demonstrates that lesson with the use of flash cards or other visuals, mime, music, illustration and other creative methods. Then it's the students turn. They participate in a number of activities that incorporate all of the four language skills.

23 лютого, 2009 р. -- ESL координатори КУК-СВ та вчителі під час канікул у школі організували заняття у формі гри “Scavenger Hunt” у торговому центрі Lawson Heights. 19 лютого 18 студентів ESL приймали участь у грі та були проінформовані про правила (англійською та українською мовами). Команди складалися з 2 студентів Початкового рівня, та 2 студентів Середнього рівня . Кожна команда мала свій кольоровий код та назву. Час початку змагання між командами був зазначений вчителями, команди мали письмово відповісти на 15 поставлених завдань.

One example of this teaching methodology occurred on the evening of February 19, 2009 when the students participated in a Scavenger Hunt at the Mall at Lawson Heights. Eighteen students arrived at the Mall at 7 pm where they were briefed (in English and Ukrainian) in the game rules. Two students were selected from the Beginner and 2 from the Intermediate class to make up a team. Each team was colour-coded and required to give their team a name. Each team's start time was recorded by the teachers and they were given a sheet of 15 tasks to complete.

One of these tasks was to find the price of a 2-litre carton of milk and name the colour of the carton. Another was to name a place where you could get a haircut. Another was to find a store that was hiring staff. Still another was to ask the name of an employee that worked at a particular store.

Одне з завдань було – знайти 2л. молока в картонній упаковці та зазначити колір упаковки. Друге завдання – зазначити місце, де можна зробити підстригання. Інше – знайти магазин, який має об’яву по найму на роботу. А також, запитати ім’я працівника в будь-якому магазині.

By participating in the Scavenger Hunt, students learned not only new vocabulary, but also discovered where there were job openings, what services the Mall has to offer and got to practise their conversational skills.

Practising this unique method of teaching results in a student remembering, through association, the material that's presented, and having fun in the process.

Своєю участю в грі “Scavenger Hunt” студенти не тільки поповнили свій словарний запас, але також довідались де можна знайти об’яви по найму на роботу, які послуги має торговий центр Lawson Heights, та мали можливість попрактикувати спілкування англійською мовою.
