PCUH Mohyla Lecture: Dr. Mark Von Hagen of Arizona State University (7:00 pm)
Room 1001, St, Thomas More College, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon
2015 Mohyla Lecture
Between Ukrainian Diasporas in Germany: Reflections on Teaching Modern Ukrainian History
Dr. Mark Von Hagen, Professor of History and Global Studies School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies and School of Politics and Global Studies, Arizona State University
Reception to follow
Presented by the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage
Launched in 1994, the Mohyla Lecture is a major academic event in Ukrainian Studies at the University of Saskatchewan. The series is devoted to a discussion of Ukrainian heritage and contemporary affairs while invited speakers are leading authorities in the field.
Prof. Von Hagen shares a story of how he found himself transmitting the activist-research of several generations of diaspora scholars to a new generation of diaspora Ukrainian students who were for the most part unfamiliar with this rich legacy. The new Ukrainians wanted to get past the "old" debates about who lost Ukraine and why against the backdrop of last summer's Russian-Ukrainian war. But it is also the story of a historian attempting to grapple with existing historical narratives as a way to understand the nature of contemporary conflict in Ukraine.
Join us for a unique and thought-provoking evening – everyone is welcome!

Commentary by Prof. Joan Borsa (Department of Art and Art History, University of Saskatchewan) and Jen Budney (Associate Curator, Mendel Art Gallery). Reception to follow.
