Ukraine Day of Independence in Prince Albert

The Prince Albert & District Ukrainian Culture and Heritage Club ~ Veselka is joining members of our community in recognizing Ukraine Day of Independence Thursday, August 24, 2023. Join us in Memorial Square at Prince Albert City Hall beginning at 5 p.m. as we recognize Ukraine's declaration of independence in 1991 amid its continuing fight against persecution from russia and the ongoing conflict that has resulted in the deaths of many in Ukraine.

To date, more than 90 families have settled in Prince Albert after fleeing their country due to the war, with help from a small group of local volunteers that continues to provide support and guidance to newcomers. Thursday's event at City Hall will recognize Ukraine's continued fight for peace and provide support to newcomer families settling in Prince Albert whose lives have been forever changed by war.

We will be collecting donations of hygiene items as well, including:

• Soap
• Full-size bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash
• Toothbrushes and toothpaste
• Combs and small manicure sets

Everyone is welcome to attend the event on Thursday. Monetary donations to help support newcomers to Prince Albert will be accepted, with donations over $20 eligible for a tax receipt. Cheques can be made out to Calvary United Church and all funds collected will be used to support families right here in Prince Albert.

Donations of larger items can also be arranged. At least five newcomer families are expecting new babies in the coming weeks and there is a great need for safety-approved car seats, cribs, and strollers, along with kitchen and bedroom furniture, new sheets, towels, and pillows. As new families settle in Prince Albert, suitable housing is also a priority and volunteers are working diligently to find appropriate homes and rental units.

As a community, we will gather on Thursday, August 24, to recognize Ukraine's independence and its resilience. Please help us spread the word and encourage residents to join us at Memorial Square for a time of reflection and awareness.

For those who wish to donate in other ways, a silver collection will be taken Thursday for the Canada-Ukraine Foundation (CUF) to support humanitarian relief for those impacted by the war in Ukraine.
